CHAPTER III

Our Philosophy

LAMBA is built around attention.

Attention to the music we play, the coffee and food we serve, the way the room is designed, and the way each guest is welcomed.

The aim is not to slow modern life down, but to create a place where people can be more present within it. A neighbourhood café should be comfortable, thoughtful, and easy to return to.

Conscious Listening

Music plays an important role at LAMBA, but the café is not silent or governed by strict listening rules.

During the day, records accompany conversation, reading, work, and coffee. The volume and selection are carefully managed so that music contributes to the room without taking it over.

At selected times, LAMBA hosts dedicated listening sessions. During these events, conversation pauses and the music becomes the main focus. These are shared listening experiences rather than performances.

The purpose is simple: to give people an opportunity to hear music with greater attention.

Music Without Borders

LAMBA presents music from different countries, cultures, and traditions.

The collection focuses mainly on recordings from the 1960s to the early 1980s, alongside contemporary artists working within jazz, soul, funk, folk, and related styles.

The selection reflects years of collecting, travelling, and research. Records are chosen for their musical quality, cultural context, and ability to introduce listeners to something new.

Rarity is not the priority. Curiosity is.

Hospitality

Guests do not need to understand hi-fi, recognise the music, or know anything about specialty coffee before visiting.

Everyone should feel equally welcome, whether they come every morning or are visiting for the first time.

Good hospitality is often expressed through simple actions: remembering an order, offering help, explaining something without being patronising, or making sure someone feels comfortable in the room.

Service should feel personal, generous, and relaxed.

Coffee

Coffee is the foundation of the business.

LAMBA serves single-origin coffee, rotating guest roasters, espresso, filter coffee, and traditional Turkish coffee. Each method represents a different approach, but all are prepared with the same level of care.

Quality matters, but coffee should never feel complicated or exclusive. Staff should be able to explain what they are serving in a clear and approachable way.

The aim is to prepare consistently good coffee and make people feel comfortable ordering it.

Food

The menu draws on the culinary traditions of Turkey and the wider Eastern Mediterranean, reflecting the backgrounds and food cultures behind LAMBA.

Rather than operating as a full restaurant, the café offers a focused selection of seasonal dishes suited to different times of the day.

The menu should remain simple, approachable, and practical to produce, while still having a clear identity. Seasonal ingredients may influence individual dishes, but the overall character of the food should remain consistent.

Community

LAMBA is intended to become part of its neighbourhood, not simply a business located within it.

The programme may include listening sessions, artist talks, workshops, book clubs, chess afternoons, family mornings, tea gatherings, screenings, and small live performances.

Activities should develop in response to the interests of the local community. LAMBA can also provide a platform for local artists, independent projects, and small businesses where there is a genuine connection to the café’s values.

Events are only one part of community building. Familiarity, regular visits, recognised faces, and everyday conversations are equally important.

The design of LAMBA is simple, warm, and functional.

Natural materials, carefully planned acoustics, flexible furniture, and restrained lighting create a room that can operate as a café, listening space, and small event venue.

The sound system is central to the experience, but it should not make the room feel technical or intimidating. It is there to support the atmosphere rather than dominate it.

Furniture and layouts should be easy to adapt throughout the day. Materials should be durable, age well, and serve a clear purpose.

Nothing should be included purely for decoration.

Sustainability

LAMBA approaches sustainability through longevity and responsible daily decisions.

This includes choosing durable furniture and equipment, maintaining and repairing items where possible, reducing unnecessary waste, and working with local suppliers and partners.

It also means building the business at a manageable pace. Growth should support the quality of the café rather than weaken it.

Success is measured through financial stability, but also through lasting relationships with staff, suppliers, guests, and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Design

A Final Thought

The music, coffee, food, hospitality, and design of LAMBA are all guided by the same principle: care and attention improve everyday experiences.

LAMBA does not ask people to escape modern life or behave in a particular way. It simply provides a comfortable setting in which they can listen, meet, discover, and spend time together.

That is the philosophy of LAMBA.
